The goal: be in the top 3-5
When someone asks ChatGPT about a healthcare provider in your area, it recommends 3 to 5 practices. Your goal is to be in that group.
Based on our research across 41 cities and over 19,000 AI responses, here's a practical guide to making that happen.
Step 1: Audit your website structure
This is the highest-impact change you can make. Look at your website and ask:
- —Does each major service or condition have its own dedicated page?
- —Are your page titles clear and descriptive?
- —Do your headings follow a logical hierarchy (H1 → H2 → H3)?
- —Can someone (or an AI) understand what you do just by reading your page titles and headings?
If the answer to any of these is no, that's where you start. Website structure is the #1 predictor of AI recommendations.
Step 2: Create dedicated service pages
This is the most actionable step. Create a separate page for each major condition you treat or service you offer.
Each page should include:
- —A clear title that names the condition or service
- —What the condition is and who it affects
- —How you treat it and what your approach involves
- —What patients can expect during treatment
- —Answers to common patient questions
These pages don't need to be long. They need to be clear, specific, and well-organized.
Step 3: Make your information extractable
AI doesn't read your website the way a human does. It scans for clear, structured information it can extract and cite. To help AI do this:
- —Use descriptive headings that match how patients ask questions
- —Put key information near the top of each section
- —Keep paragraphs short and focused on one point
- —Use bullet lists for symptoms, treatments, and qualifications
- —Add an FAQ section to your most important pages
Step 4: Add structured data
Structured data (also called schema markup) is invisible code that tells AI what your business is, where you're located, what services you offer, and who your practitioners are.
The most important types for healthcare practices:
- —LocalBusiness or specific type (e.g., Physician, Dentist)
- —MedicalBusiness with services listed
- —FAQPage for your question-and-answer sections
- —Person for practitioner profiles
Step 5: Ensure consistency across the web
AI cross-references information from multiple sources. Make sure your business name, address, phone number, and services are consistent across your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Healthgrades, and other directories.
Inconsistencies confuse AI and reduce its confidence in recommending you.
Step 6: Monitor and iterate
Ask AI tools about your practice and your competitors regularly. Track which conditions and services AI associates with your practice. Look for gaps — conditions you treat that AI doesn't mention — and create or improve content to fill them.
AI search is evolving quickly. The practices that monitor their AI visibility and adapt will maintain their advantage over time.
Timeline: what to expect
Most practices see changes in AI recommendations within 4 to 8 weeks of making structural changes. The effect compounds over time — each improvement gives AI another reason to recommend you and another condition to associate with your practice.
The sooner you start, the sooner you build an advantage that competitors will have to work much harder to catch up to.
