Why FAQ schema is the highest-leverage AEO tactic
FAQ sections are the closest match to how people actually use AI. They ask a question, they want an answer. If your website has the question with a clear answer, and FAQ schema makes it machine-readable, you've given AI everything it needs to cite your practice.
In our research, fewer than 2% of practices had FAQ schema implemented. This isn't because it's difficult — it's because most businesses don't know about it yet. That gap is your opportunity.
How FAQ schema works
FAQ schema (FAQPage type in schema.org) is structured data that marks up question-and-answer pairs on your website. It tells AI: "This page has these specific questions with these specific answers."
Without FAQ schema, AI has to parse your page content and guess which text is a question and which is an answer. With FAQ schema, the questions and answers are clearly labeled in a format AI can read instantly.
The bonus: FAQ schema also enables rich results in Google search — expandable FAQ dropdowns that can significantly increase your click-through rate.
Building an effective FAQ strategy
Step 1: Mine the right questions. Don't guess what patients ask — find out. Check your front desk for common phone questions. Review your Google Business Profile Q&A. Search AI tools for questions about your services.
Our free AI Question Miner can generate the types of questions AI handles for any industry in seconds.
Step 2: Write direct answers. Each answer should be 50-150 words. Start with the direct answer in the first sentence, then provide supporting detail. No fluff, no hedging, no redirecting to "call us to learn more."
Step 3: Place FAQs on the right pages. Every major service page should have its own FAQ section with 3-7 questions specific to that service. Don't dump all questions on one FAQ page — distribute them where they're most relevant.
Step 4: Add the schema markup. Implement FAQPage schema on every page with FAQ content. The schema should exactly match the visible FAQ text on the page — no hidden content.
FAQ topics that drive AI citations
The most citation-generating FAQ topics follow predictable patterns:
- —Cost questions: "How much does [service] cost?" — these are among the most common AI queries.
- —Process questions: "What happens during [service]?" "How long does [service] take?"
- —Comparison questions: "What's the difference between [option A] and [option B]?"
- —Safety questions: "Is [service] safe?" "What are the risks of [service]?"
- —Qualification questions: "Am I a good candidate for [service]?" "When should I see a [provider type]?"
Frequently Asked Questions
How many FAQ items should each page have?
Three to seven per page. Enough to cover the key questions without overwhelming the page. If you have more than seven, consider whether some questions belong on a different, more specific page.
Should I have a separate FAQ page or put FAQs on service pages?
Both, but prioritize service pages. A central FAQ page can link to service-specific content, but AI gets the most value from FAQs placed in context on the relevant service page.
How quickly do FAQ schema changes affect AI results?
For Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, changes can be reflected within days to weeks. For ChatGPT, it depends on when the model's training data is updated — which can take longer. Implement the changes now and the results will follow.
