Why Domain Authority Doesn't Matter for AI Search

Isaac Dailey·February 24, 2026

The number that should concern every SEO agency

In our chiropractic AI citation study, the correlation between domain authority and AI recommendations was r = -0.05. In our physical therapy study, it was r = 0.002. For context, a correlation of zero means there's absolutely no relationship between the two things.

Domain authority — the metric that entire SEO strategies are built around — is essentially irrelevant for AI search.

What is domain authority?

Domain authority is a score that estimates how likely a website is to rank in Google search results. It's based primarily on the number and quality of other websites that link to yours. A higher score means more and better backlinks, which generally means better Google rankings.

For decades, improving domain authority through link building has been the backbone of SEO. Agencies charge thousands of dollars per month for it. It works for Google.

It does not work for AI.

Why AI ignores domain authority

Google's algorithm relies heavily on links as votes of confidence. If many respected sites link to you, Google trusts you more. AI language models work differently.

AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity evaluate content directly. They read your pages, assess the clarity and depth of information, and determine whether your content answers the question being asked. They don't count backlinks. They don't check your Moz score.

What AI cares about is whether your website makes the answer easy to find, easy to read, and easy to extract.

What the data shows

Across our studies, the factors that actually predict AI recommendations are:

  • Website structure (how pages are organized) — by far the strongest signal
  • Dedicated pages for specific services or conditions
  • Clear heading hierarchy within pages
  • Answer-formatted content that directly addresses common questions
  • Structured data that helps AI understand your business

What this means for you

If your marketing strategy is built around link building and domain authority, you're optimizing for a game AI isn't playing. You might rank well on Google — and that still matters — but you're invisible to the growing number of people who ask AI for recommendations instead.

The flip side is encouraging: you don't need a massive budget or years of link building to win in AI search. A well-structured website with clear, detailed content about your services can outperform a competitor with ten times your domain authority.

That's the reality our data shows, across multiple industries and dozens of cities. Domain authority is a Google metric. AI search is a different game with different rules.
