The quick way to check your AI visibility
The fastest method is to use our free AI Visibility Checker. Enter your URL and it analyzes your website structure, content, schema markup, and tests whether AI tools recommend your business — all in about 30 seconds.
But you can also check manually. Here's how to do a thorough audit across all major AI platforms.
Manual AI visibility audit
Step 1: Test ChatGPT
Open ChatGPT and ask variations of the questions your customers ask. Try:
- —"Who's the best [your service] in [your city]?"
- —"Recommend a [your service] near [your location]."
- —"What's the top-rated [your service] in [your area]?"
Note whether your business is mentioned. If it is, note the position — are you first, second, or further down the list?
Step 2: Test Perplexity
Run the same queries in Perplexity. Because Perplexity cites its sources, you can also check if your website appears as a citation even if your business name isn't explicitly mentioned.
Step 3: Test Google AI Overviews
Search Google for the same queries and look for the AI Overview box at the top of results. Note that AI Overviews don't appear for every query and may vary by location.
What to look for in the results
Track these signals across all platforms:
- —Are you mentioned at all? If not, you need foundational AEO work.
- —What position are you? First recommendation vs. last makes a big difference in clickthrough.
- —What does AI say about you? The description reveals what AI thinks your strengths and specialties are.
- —Is the information accurate? Wrong hours, wrong services, or wrong location undermine trust.
- —Are your competitors mentioned? Knowing who AI recommends instead of you reveals your competitive landscape.
What to do with the results
If AI recommends your business — great. Check the accuracy and look for ways to strengthen your position.
If AI doesn't recommend you, don't panic. It means there's an opportunity. The most common reasons businesses don't appear:
- —Thin website content — too few pages, too little text.
- —Poor site structure — no dedicated service pages, vague headings.
- —Missing structured data — no schema markup helping AI understand your business.
- —Inconsistent information — your website says different things than your Google Business Profile.
Our AI Search Foundation package addresses all of these issues with a comprehensive audit and optimization plan, delivered in 24 hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I check my AI visibility?
Monthly is a good cadence for most businesses. AI platforms update regularly, so checking too frequently won't show meaningful changes. After making significant website changes, wait 2-4 weeks before rechecking.
Why does AI recommend my competitors but not me?
Usually it's a website structure issue. Your competitors likely have more comprehensive service pages, better organized content, or schema markup that you're missing. Compare their website structure to yours to identify gaps.
Can I influence what AI says about my business?
You can influence it by improving your website content, keeping your business information consistent across all platforms, and adding schema markup. You can't directly control it, but you can make it much more likely that AI cites accurate, favorable information about your practice.
